Simon Set to Make Political Announcement Wednesday

Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is announcing her political plans in a series of news conferences around the state.

In a Facebook post, the Carbondale Democrat says she'll release "very exciting news" about her campaign on Wednesday. She hasn't said what position she might seek, but has touted her background as a former county prosecutor and law professor.

Abramson To Announce Governor’s Run Intentions Soon

Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson says he's close to deciding whether he'll run for governor in 2015. Abramson said yesterday he expects to decide in the next couple of weeks. The former Louisville mayor is among several potential Democratic candidates eyeing the governor's race.

Federal Grant To Help KY Unemployed Find Work

Kentucky has received a nearly $1.3 million federal grant aimed at helping the jobless get back in the workforce. Gov. Steve Beshear's office says the U.S. Department of Labor grant will be used for in-person assessments in local career centers.

TN Judge Says DCS Back On Track With Records Release

A Nashville judge said the Tennessee Department of Children's Services has gotten back on track with providing records to the news media of children in the agency’s care who died or nearly died. In a hearing last month, Chancellor Carol McCoy suggested someone at DCS needed to go to jail for making extensive redactions to the records.

IL Pheasant Hunting Locations Announced

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will allow residents to hunt pheasants at 19 different locations across the state in the next year. Fifteen of the 19 sites are operated by the state agency. The remaining four are operated through a public-private partnership with the department and T. Miller, Inc.

A Nashville-based fireplace manufacturer says it plans to close a plant in Union City in 2014. Media reports that Innovative Hearth Products CEO Mark Klein says the move will allow the company "to remain the low cost producer and stay very competitive" in the industry.

KY Cuts Number Of Jailed Non-Criminal Juveniles

Judges in Kentucky have cut the number of children they’re sending to jail for non-criminal offenses such as skipping school and running away from home in half. Recently released data from Kentucky Youth Advocates shows that the number of juveniles jailed has steadily fallen to just over a thousand last year, down from almost 23 hundred in 2007.

Former Paducah Sun-Democrat Executive Editor Dies

The first executive editor at The Paducah Sun-Democrat, which later became The Paducah Sun, has died. Preston Kennedy was 90.

The Paducah Sun reports Kennedy died early Thursday at St. Joseph Jessamine Care Center in Nicholasville. The Hager and Cundiff Funeral Home says arrangements are still pending.

Keep Tennessee Beautiful has hired Melissa Marshall to be its new executive director. Marshall has more than 20 years of public service experience. Prior to her recent appointment, Marshall served nine years as director of communications and external affairs for the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Development Disabilities.
