Wasps More Likely to Sting in Fall

Murray, KY – Wasps and yellowjackets are a common sight this time of year. The stinging insects are looking for t heir final meal of 2008. But, University of Kentucky entomologist Lee Townsend says wasps and hornets could be aggressive this fall.

"particulary after we have a relatively dry summer like we've had now, moisture is short for them and food is short so they become much more aggressive and persistent in trying to get some of the food and moisture they need from food we have or fruit that we may have in out backyard."

Flags At Half-Staff for Ft. Campbell Soldier

Murray, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense reports Chief Warrant Officer Michael Slebodnik died September 11 when the aircraft he was piloting received enemy fire. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday.

Police Chief Seach Narrows

Murray, KY – The Paducah City Commission will receive updates tomorrow on the search for a new police chief. City Manager Jim Zumwalt tells the Paducah Sun an outside consulting firm will present roughly a dozen candidates to the commission tomorrow. That field will eventually narrow to five possibilities the commission will interview in person. Zumwalt believes the city will hire a new police chief before the end of the year. Sandy Joslyn is serving as interim Chief through January 31. She is not seeking the permanent position.

Madisonville Soldier Killed in Iraq

Madisonville, KY – A soldier from Madisonville, Kentucky has died in Iraq. The Defense Department says 27-year-old Sgt. William P. Rudd died Sunday after being hit by enemy small-arms fire while on combat patrol in Mosul. Rudd was based in Fort Benning Georgia, and, according to the Madisonville Messenger was on his fifth deployment to Iraq.

Smoking Ban Lawsuit

Murray, KY – Two Hopkins County Businessmen are challenging their county's recently enacted smoking ban. Thomas Richardson and James Haulk claim the ban, adopted by the Hopkins County board of health, to be unconstitutional. The men have filed a formal lawsuit to prevent the ban from going into effect. The suit claims the board did not have the legal authority to enact or enforce the regulation and acted outside its authority. It also claims the ban does not establish explicit standards for the regulation's application and enforcement.

Nashville, TN – Belmont University in Nashville is basking in the spotlight as the site of the second presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama. WKU Public Radio's Lisa Autry went to Belmont and spoke with administrators and students to learn about the intense preparation that has gone into the event.
