Obama Effigy Case

Lexington, KY – Two Kentucky men who hung an effigy of President-elect Barack Obama on the University of Kentucky campus could have their case heard by a Fayette County grand jury. Defense attorney Fred Peters says 22-year-old Joe Fischer and 21-year-old Hunter Bush waived their right to preliminary hearing today. Peters says they opted instead to take their case directly to a grand jury in hopes that the charges will be dismissed. The two men were arrested after the effigy was found hanging from a tree over a walkway in late October.

Beshear Says No Temporary Solution

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says his administration will soon have a plan together to address a huge, projected state budget shortfall. But he warns, it won't be a cure-all.

It's a temporary solution for this fiscal year. All of the experts seem to indicate that this is not going to end June 30, this economic downturn. We are in this financial crisis for a while. We may well be looking at next year as a worse year than this year.

SNAP Text Messaging Alert

Paducah, KY – Six thousand students who attend West Kentucky Community and Technical College now can receive emergency alerts on their cell phones. It's part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System's new network, the Safety Notification Alert Process or SNAP. Public Relations Director Janett Blythe says as of this semester all faculty and staff receive up to the minute computer and phone alerts during potential emergencies on campus. She says students and staff can also sign up for text message notifications.

Tennessee Disaster Relief

Washington, D. C. – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is giving Tennessee 20-point-6 million-dollars for disaster relief. The grant will aid residents in rebuilding their homes and businesses after they were damaged by tornados and severe weather this year. The money is a part of the six-billion-dollars in supplemental Community Development Block Grant funds given to states for expenses related to disaster relief and long-term recovery.
