Montgomery Co. OKs Guns in Parks

Clarksville, TN – After the first of September, people will legally be allowed to carry guns with valid permits in Montgomery County parks. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports that inaction by the county's Conservation Board last night, effectively stopped a resolution to continue the ban on guns in parks. Montgomery County voted in June to keep guns out of their four parks in the wake of Tennessee's newly passed state law. Other dangerous weapons like crossbows, knives, and boomerangs are still on the ban list.

Madisonville's Re-Leaf Project

Madisonville, KY – An initiative to replenish Hopkins County's tree population has taken root. The Re-Leaf Project is a move by the Community Improvement Foundation to restore area tree canopies, decimated by January's ice storm. It plans to plant one thousand trees a year for the next five. The Madisonville Messenger reports the group is hosting a public meeting at 10 A-M tomorrow in the second floor conference room of U-S Bank in Madisonville.

Bug Warrants New Firewood Policy

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Department of Parks is revising its firewood policy for park campgrounds due to a destructive insect infestation. The emerald ash borer was discovered in state ash trees earlier this year. Kentucky's 31 parks already prohibit out-of-state firewood, but now in-state firewood may no longer be moved outside quarantined counties. So far, eight eastern Kentucky counties have been quarantined because of the ash borer. Researchers are also monitoring the spread of the insect in western Kentucky.

Sixth suspect in Hopkinsville Beating Murder

Christian, KY – A sixth suspect has been charged with murder in the beating of John Wayne Lyle. 20 year old Quartez J. Lynch was arrested by Hopkinsville Police last Friday. One adult and four were juveniles have already been charged. Lynch is being held at Christian County Jail with a bond set at 500,000 dollars. Next week court officials will decide whether to send Lynch's case to a Grand Jury.

Kentucky Budget

Kentucky – With Kentucky's unemployment rate soaring, citizens' income and spending have been reduced. The proof is in sagging state sales tax and individual income tax collections. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh has the numbers.

On June 30, the state ended fiscal 2009 with a balanced budget, but in July, revenue receipts for the first month of fiscal 2010 were off four percent. Road fund receipts for July were down eight percent.
