Fiscal Court Hears Ballard Jail Needs

Wickliffe, KY – The needs of Ballard County's jail took priority at a special-called meeting yesterday. Members of the county's Fiscal Court listened to a list of replacement costs for equipment. Cost estimates to fix and upgrade the 13-year-old facility are upwards of $175,000; that's nearly 15% more than the jail's annual budget. The Paducah Sun reports replacing the lighting-and-door control system and installing a new ventilation system take top priority. Next week, the fiscal court plans to discuss financing options.

Oak Grove Plans for Convention Center

Clarksville, TN – Oak Grove, Kentucky is considering building a convention center. The four-and-a-half million dollar facility would be in close proximity to Fort Campbell and just across the state line from Clarksville, Tennessee. The city's tourism commission recently secured a loan through the Kentucky League of Cities that will pay for the third phase of construction. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports the convention center will be built between U-S Highway 41-A and I-24.

Jury: $14.7 Million Verdict against Astrazeneca

Frankfort, KY – A Franklin County Circuit Court jury has hit drug-maker AstraZeneca with a $14.7 million verdict in a case that claimed the company inflated its prescription drug prices for Medicaid reimbursements.

Attorney General Jack Conway says in a news release he's pleased the office was able to recover money for Kentucky's Medicaid program. The state's Medicaid program calculates its drug reimbursement rates based on published average wholesale prices. Prosecutors claimed AstraZeneca inflated those published prices.

Bowling Green, KY – Republican Rand Paul has raised more than $1 million for his U.S. Senate campaign, largely from Internet fundraisers that have proven especially lucrative for him. The son of former presidential candidate Ron Paul eclipsed all other major candidates in the third quarter.

Humbaugh Update 1

Frankfort, KY – State health officials want to make sure Kentuckians know the symptoms of H1N1, or swine flu. State Epidemiologist Dr. Kraig Humbaugh says swine flu symptoms are very similar to seasonal flu symptoms.


"Fever, cough, sore throat, headache, body aches, chills and feeling tired. What's a little bit different about the H1N1 is we are tending to see a bit more vomiting and diarrhea associated with H1N1."
