IL Governor Backs Relief Measure

Springfield, IL – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is backing a measure by a U-S congressman to help military families. The bill would give families money collected from a donation check-off program on federal income tax forms. Democratic Bill Foster is sponsoring the legislation to create the National Military Family Relief Fund. Foster's proposal is modeled on a similar Illinois program. Governor Quinn says the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund has collected 8-million-dollars to aid military families since its inception in 2003.

Charitable Competition

Murray, KY – Last weekend a barrage of people entered a new second-hand retailer in Murray hoping to find a deal or two. Goodwill's opening might be good for the bargain shopper, but what impact might this national chain have on a local charitable clothing store? Carrie Pond has more.

Debris Removal in Calloway

Murray, KY – Though more than two months have passed since an ice storm ravaged much of western Kentucky, debris removal crews are still on the roads. Contractors for the Department of Highways will be working this week at several points in Calloway County, including 94 East. Motorists should be alert for haulers entering dumpsites on highways 464 and 80.

EPA Investigates Honeywell

Metropolis, IL – The Environmental Protection Agency has opened an investigation of nuclear fuel manufacturer Honeywell Specialty Products in Metropolis. The EPA is inspecting the storage and handling of a nuclear byproduct, potassium hydroxide. Honeywell has issued a statement saying the EPA investigation comes as a response to self-disclosure on the company's environmental compliance practices. The facility will continue to operate during the EPA's inquiry.

Former County Attorney Indicted

Cadiz, KY – Former Trigg County Attorney and native to the area has been indicted on investment fraud. The US Department of Justice has charged Kenneth Kennedy with seven counts of wire fraud and five counts of mail fraud in Tennessee. The scheme, dating back to 2005, has fleeced victims of an estimated seven and a half million dollars. Kennedy's wife, Sheila Kennedy, has pled guilty to involvement in the case. Two other co-conspirators are also facing charges.

Hopkins Schools Sends Layoff Notifications

Madisonville, KY – School officials in Hopkins County have begun notifying teachers who may lose their jobs at the end of the school year. Assistant Superintendent Linda Zellich says employees in the arts and humanities would be first to go, since those areas have been cut from state assessments. The district is waiting to hear if some grant-funded positions will be renewed and how much stimulus money will go to the schools. Officials will announce more information on employee contracts at the May 4 board of education meeting.
