Whitfield, House Vote "Nay" on TARP

Washington, D.C – The U-S House of Representatives voted 270 to 155 yesterday against spending the final $350 billon allocated through the Troubled Assets Relief Program, or TARP. TARP was introduced by the Bush administration and approved by Congress in October amid instability in the credit market. Kentucky's 1st district representative Ed Whitfield is one of the 270 who disapproves of TARP's handling.

Police Rule Deaths Murder-Suicide

Paducah, KY – Paducah Police say a murder-suicide was the cause of death for a local couple found earlier this week. Kristofer Habeck and Anna-Maria Shane were found dead in their home Tuesday. Upon investigation, police determined Habeck shot Shane as she slept and then shot himself. The couple had been arguing in the days prior to their deaths, and detectives say Habeck had threatened suicide. Both victims sustained single gunshot wounds to the head.

Price Gouging Investigation Results to Be Announced

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear and Attorney General Jack Conway are planning to announce the results of a gas price-gouging investigation stemming from Hurricane Ike. They held press conference late this morning in Frankfort. Gas prices in Kentucky spiked in September as Hurricane Ike bore down on the Texas coast, prompting Beshear to declare a state of emergency, which triggered the state's anti-price gouging law. Beshear has said some gas stations started raising fuel prices overnight before the storm made landfall.
