TN Unemployment Highest in 25 Years

Nashville, TN – According to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, the state unemployment rate is the highest it has been in 25 years. The report released today shows rates jumped to 9.9 percent in April. Tennessee's unemployment rate, which was 9.6 percent in March, is higher than the national unemployment rate of 8.9 percent.

TN Wine Sales

Nashville, TN – A proposal that would allow Tennessee consumers to have wine shipped directly to their homes is headed to the governor for his consideration. The bill would allow wineries that acquire a $300 license to ship up to three cases to Tennessee consumers per year.

Bardwell man dies in fire

Bardwell, KY – A Bardwell man is dead after his trailer caught fire early this morning. When first responders reached the residence, it was fully engulfed in flames. Firemen discovered 65 year-old Max Shemwell once they had contained the fire. No foul play is suspected and toxicology reports are pending.

Safetran provides Crittenden County with 100 jobs

Marion, KY – Safetran Systems Corp will offer economic relief to Crittenden County when it announces its plans to hire 100 new employees. The Crittendon Press reports that Safetran received preliminary approval for $2.2 million in state-tax incentives for a $2.8 million expansion. The grant will help the company expand its workforce from 50 to 150 employees, and the sum will rank among the most significant state tax incentives ever awarded to a Crittenden County business.

Burglar hits four Paris businesses

Paris, TN – Four Paris businesses on the same street are victims of a string of Tuesday night burglaries. Sergeant Ricky Watson says police don't know how many people were involved in the crimes. The businesses on Tyson Avenue lost about $2,400 total in cash and small items. Watson says police are still searching for suspects.

Kentucky Graduation Rates on the Rise

Frankfort, KY – School data reveals Kentucky's best-ever high school graduation rate. In 2008, the number of students earning a high school diploma within four years rose to over 84 percent. Lisa Gross with the Department of Education gives credit to teachers for the one percent increase.

"When schools pay attention to what each and every child needs and wants. Then you see graduation rates and other rates like this go up."

Lowertown Arts Festival

Paducah, KY – This Saturdaymarks Paducah's 7th annual LowerTown Arts and Music Festival. Marketing Director for the Paducah Renaissance Alliance Jessica Perkins says attendees this year can expect more interactive activities and local flair. Carrie Pond talks with Perkins about this year's event.
