Madisonville Principal Resigns

Madisonville, KY – Madisonville-North Hopkins High School principal Chad Burgett officially resigned last week. Assistant Superintendent Linda Zellich says Burgett wrote his letter of resignation at the beginning of June, citing health issues as his reason for leaving. The former principal asked to be reassigned to a middle school teaching position. Zellich says Superintendent James Stevens hopes to have a new principal in place by mid-July.

Hazel Council Sets Aside Funds for Land

Hazel, KY – The Hazel City Council has set aside a large portion of its 2009-2010 budget to purchase land near its downtown area. Council member Nancy Mieure (Mure) says they voted unanimously to pay $21,500 for a lot just north of the Heart of Hazel Antique Mall. Members discussed using the land as a site for a small park or short-term medical clinic. Mieure says the council simply wants a piece of land ready for any "shovel ready" grants the government might award the city.

KY Groups Address Teen Suicide

Frankfort, KY – Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death for Kentucky teenagers. State and non-profit child advocacy groups have developed an educational toolkit in an effort to prevent youth suicides. KPR's Stu Johnson reports.

KY Graduates Hit Record High

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky colleges conferred a record number of degrees in May. The Council on Postsecondary Education says the total number of degrees and certificates issued topped thirty thousand for the first time in the state's history. C-P-E President Robert King says students are obviously preparing for the workplace.

This is improving the quality of the workforce in Kentucky, and there is a growing pool of highly talented and highly educated people here ready to work.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

Frankfort, KY – Kids in some Kentucky schools will have greater access to fresh fruit and vegetables this coming school year. Sixty-five elementary schools, including ones in Fulton, Christian, and Henderson Counties, are eligible for the federal program. Schools with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch qualify for the program, which provides fruit and vegetables as snacks for students.
