Montgomery County Jail Inmate Hangs Self

Clarksville, TN – Montgomery County Jail officials say an inmate hung himself in his cell Sunday. 53-year-old Jay Frederick Smith of Oklahoma was found dead hanging by a bed sheet during a routine security sweep Sunday afternoon. Smith was arrested early Saturday morning on a DUI charge driving a tractor-trailer west from Nashville on I-24. Another truck driver reported seeing Smith's truck almost run four other cars off the road.

Convention Board: Executive Inn Foreclosure Soon

Paducah, KY – A foreclosure lawsuit on the Executive Inn could be filed soon. The Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center board met in a closed session yesterday. Chairman Jim Sigler says he expects to file for foreclosure in quote days not weeks. The board owns the convention center, as well as the land the hotel sits on. They claim the Executive Inn's closure voids the lease agreements, which gives it rights to the hotel.

641 Semi Crash

Murray, KY – Six-forty-one south in Murray is open again to traffic after a Semi crash earlier this afternoon. The Semi driver hit a utility pole. Police closed the road because power lines were threatening to fall into the roadway. There are no reports of injuries at this time.

Governor Talks of Budget Cuts

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear says it likely will be mid-July before he knows how much to cut the state budget to make sure it's balanced by July 2010. The last year of the current biennium begins Wednesday.

"I don't think anybody expects the economy in the fiscal year we're about to enter to be significantly better than has been forecast. So, we're not anticipating greater than expected revenues. And we're going to have to budget and operate on the basis of those official revenue estimates."

School Safety Report Positive

Richmond, KY – The number of Kentucky public school students disciplined for serious violations of school board policy or committing a crime on campus is on the decline. That's according to the latest safe schools data project report issued by the Kentucky Center for School Safety. Director Jon Akers says the drop, over a five-year period, is due in part to increased diligence by school administrators. He says one recent trend that concerns officials is the rising number of terroristic threatening incidents.
