"The Class" at Maiden Alley Cinema

Murray, KY – Francois Begaudeau is a schoolteacher turned writer who brings his story of a year in a French high school to the screen. "The Class" doesn't contain any of the tropes audiences might expect in a film like this. Instead, Begaudeau demonstrates that the day-to-day struggles in the classroom are enough, even going so far as play a fictionalized version of himself in the film. Todd Hatton spoke with Larry Thomas about "The Class," on offer this week at Paducah's Maiden Alley Cinema.

12 with Swine Flu in KY

Frankfort, KY – Health officials have confirmed two additional cases of swine flu in Kentucky. The Department for Public Health said Thursday that the cases involve adult males from Madison County and Oldham County. Spokeswoman Gwenda Bond says the health department is investigating circumstances surrounding the cases. Kentucky now has a total of 12 confirmed swine flu cases.

Fire Department Clear of Wrongdoing

Reidland, KY – The Kentucky State Police say claims that the Reidland-Farley Fire Department improperly distributed fuel during the ice storm are unfounded. KSP Trooper Dean Patterson says officers conducted several interviews with fire department employees and community members and found no evidence to support the allegations. An investigation began after McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry received an anonymous letter. Patterson says police are now working to finish formal investigations and will soon close the case.

Kentucky Civil War Reenactment

Sacramento, KY – Hundreds of Civil War re-enactors from several states converge in western Kentucky this weekend for the Battle of Sacramento. The three-day event commemorates the December 28, 1861, battle between the Union army and forces led by noted Confederate commander Nathan Bedford Forrest. The events include period crafts, a cannon demonstration, and a cavalry race. Organizers are expecting more than 600 re-enactors from 16 states.
