New Metropolis Alderman/Budget Woes

Metropolis, IL – Newly-appointed Metropolis alderman Kim Corzine Brown attends her first City Council meeting tonight after being chosen by Mayor Billy McDaniel to take over her late father's unexpired term. She and fellow aldermen are expected to begin confronting the city's first budget deficit since Harrah's Casino was built in the early 1990's. Metropolis faces a $2 million shortfall since the riverboat posted a two percent drop in revenues this quarter.

Fort Campbell Welcomes Home Vietnam Vets

Fort Campbell, KY – Since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, soldiers who have returned to Fort Campbell has been greeted by waving flags, an Army band and plenty of family and friends. That was not the case in the 1960s and early '70s, when there was very little support for many Vietnam veterans returning from combat.

Illinois man drowns at Kentucky Lake

Kentucky Lake, – Officials say a southern Illinois man has drowned at Kentucky Lake. Kentucky Fish And Wildlife say 21-year-old Bradley Staley of Norris City drowned on Saturday evening. His body was recovered yesterday. A spokesperson for the Department of Fish and Wildlife says Staley had jumped off a cliff before the drowning was reported.

TRM Howard: Murray's Black Maverick

Murray, Ky. – With the local Emancipation Celebration underway, we're marking the occasion with the story of a man who emerges as a reminder of why we celebrate freedom. Born into abject poverty in early 20th century Murray, T.R.M. Howard became one of the most prominent African American doctors in the nation, and an important voice in the American Civil Rights movement. Jacque Day looks into his early life in western Kentucky with the authors of a new biography about Howard's life and work.

Tomato disease reaches Western Ky.

Christian County – The University of Kentucky has confirmed, a disease that attacks tomatoes has traveled as far west as Logan and Christian counties. Late Blight disease is caused by the Phytophthora infestans organism, and is the same cause of the historic Irish potato famine. UK extension plant pathologist Dr. Kenny Seebold says that since the disease was first reported in Kentucky in early July, it spread quickly but concentrated primarily in the southeastern part of the state.
