A Milestone at Kentucky Dam

Gilbertsville, KY – The waiting is the hardest part. Beginning at six this morning, hundreds of people have gathered at the Kentucky lock and dam to watch the last major milestone of the Kentucky Lock Addition Railroad Project. Jacque Day brings us this report from the event.

IL Law to Boost Demand for Locally Grown Food

Springfield, IL – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a law yesterday designed to increase demand for locally grown food. It sets up a system in which state agencies would purchase 20 percent of their food from local sources by 2020.

Those who buy food for state facilities and programs would be allowed to pay 10 percent more than the lowest bid if they're buying locally grown produce. Quinn used Agriculture Day at the Illinois State Fair as a backdrop to sign the measure.

Gov: School food programs getting equipment money

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has announced that 46 state schools will be getting a share of nearly $1.8 million in federal stimulus money to buy new food service program equipment. Grant money is to be used to buy equipment that improves food quality and safety and increases energy efficiency. The Beshear administration says the money may be used to buy things ranging from coolers to ovens or dishwashers. The grants range from about 21 hundred dollars in Henry County to $192,000 in McCracken County.

Grayson Plans Statewide Tour to Announce Candidacy

Frankfort, KY – Commonwealth Secretary of State Trey Grayson has scheduled a series of campaign stops next week to formally announce that he is seeking the GOP nomination to run for a U.S. Senate seat now held by Jim Bunning. Grayson has been raising money for several weeks for the race against two other Republicans - eye surgeon Rand Paul and businessman Bill Johnson.

IL ACT Scores Increase for Third Year in a Row

Springfield, IL – Illinois' average composite score on the ACT college entrance exam has increased for the third year in a row. That's according to figures released today by the Illinois State Board of Education. The state's composite score for the class of 2009 was 20.8, on the test's scale of 1 to 36. The national average was 21.1. Illinois students made slight gains or maintained the average scores in all subject areas from 2008 to 2009.
