Paducah Commission Approves Ice Rink/Firetruck

Paducah, KY – Paducah city commissioners last night approved an ordinance to bring the popular ice skating rink back this November. The rink is set to open downtown November 13. The rink saw some 18,000 people last winter and costs upwards of $90,000.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of a new ladder truck for the city's fire department. The truck costs over $700,000 and the city expects it to be delivered early next year.

I-69 Project Head Appointed

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has appointed retired highway engineer Ted Merryman to spearhead efforts to move Interstate 69 forward in western Kentucky. Merryman, who worked for the Transportation Cabinet for 25 years, also played key roles in the construction of I-24 and the Western Kentucky Parkway. In addition to I-69, he will work to continue development of the US 68/KY 80 corridor from Cadiz to Aurora. Merryman says I-69 is the most important project the cabinet has to complete in western Kentucky.

Last Currin Murder Defendant Trial

Mayfield, KY – The last defendant in the 2001 Jessica Currin murder case was in Graves Circuit Court yesterday. Lynn Austin Leech is charged with tampering with evidence and perjury. He allegedly moved Currin's body to Mayfield Middle School and set it on fire after she was strangled. Leech then allegedly lied about it to a grand jury in 2004. His trial continues today.

PSC to Hold Public Meetings on Proposed Rate Hike

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Public Service Commission will hold hearings for residents in Middlesboro and Clinton to weigh in on a proposed water rate hike. PSC Chairman David Armstrong says the PSC will use the public comments in considering a request from Water Service Corporation of Kentucky to raise its rates.

Housing No-Smoking Regulation

Murray, Ky. – A new Housing Authority of Murray policy puts a ban on smoking inside residential units effective Sept. 1. Among the reasons, Housing Authority Executive Director Faye Dodd cites the cost of rehabilitating units previously occupied by smokers, as well air quality.

Behind a Benton Bank Heist

Benton, KY – Anyone driving up Main Street in Benton last week saw a little more than garden variety work traffic for one, flak vest-clad officers storming Community Financial Services Bank. It was an exercise, not a real bank heist, but nevertheless the "mock" robbery was serious business to the Marshall County law enforcement and emergency management teams who put it together.
