Grayson Plans Statewide Tour to Announce Candidacy

Frankfort, KY – Commonwealth Secretary of State Trey Grayson has scheduled a series of campaign stops next week to formally announce that he is seeking the GOP nomination to run for a U.S. Senate seat now held by Jim Bunning. Grayson has been raising money for several weeks for the race against two other Republicans - eye surgeon Rand Paul and businessman Bill Johnson.

IL ACT Scores Increase for Third Year in a Row

Springfield, IL – Illinois' average composite score on the ACT college entrance exam has increased for the third year in a row. That's according to figures released today by the Illinois State Board of Education. The state's composite score for the class of 2009 was 20.8, on the test's scale of 1 to 36. The national average was 21.1. Illinois students made slight gains or maintained the average scores in all subject areas from 2008 to 2009.

Murray Recognized as Playful City

Murray, KY – Murray has been recognized as a "Playful City" for the second year in a row. A nonprofit organization, "Ka-boom," hands down the playful cities USA title each year. The organization promotes safe play spaces and walkways for children. Champions of Play Commission chair Pat Harrington says the goal is to have a play-space within walking distance for all local children. Murray is the only Kentucky community to receive the recognition.

Beshear Says Aggression Needed on Stimulus

Louisville, KY – One of the more deeply felt effects of the federal stimulus package could be the continued survival of local governments. That's according to Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, who addressed the annual Local Issues Conference today in Louisville. Beshear says the stimulus has helped the state balance the budget, and the spending on road projects has brought jobs to struggling areas. He says the state's best hope for coming out of recession will be to go after more stimulus dollars.
