IL Sales Taxes on Candy, Soft Drinks Up Today

Springfield, IL – Beginning today, Illinois consumers will be paying more for toiletries, candy, soft drinks and liquor. That's because lawmakers have increased the state's sales tax to raise cash to pay for a statewide construction program.

Most candy had carried a 1 percent sales tax, but it now will be taxed at 6 and a quarter percent. It'll be the same for shampoos and toothpaste that until now were taxed at the lower rate if shop keepers deemed they had a medicinal effect.

Ft. Campbell Soldier's Court Date Scheduled

Clarksville, TN – The Fort Campbell soldier charged in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old will be in court next week. 27-year-old Donald Ray Green, Jr. allegedly stabbed Byron Nixon in a Fort Campbell Boulevard parking lot late Thursday night. Green turned himself in on Friday, where he remains in jail on a million dollar bond. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports his hearing is set for September 9.

Attempted Euthanizing Wife's Court Appearance Delayed

Paducah, KY – A pre-trial conference for the woman accused of disconnecting her husband from a life-support system last May has been delayed. McCracken Circuit Court officials await a mental evaluation of Debbie Debaun before the court process continues. She allegedly unplugged a tube connecting her husband to a life support machine at Western Baptist Hospital. A nurse reattached it. Debaun remains in jail, charged with attempted murder.

Her pre-trial conference has been rescheduled for October 28.

Benton Man Convicted for Cadiz Parade Float Dispute

Benton, KY – A Benton man who complained that he was arrested for his political views has been convicted of disorderly conduct. A Trigg County jury found 79-year-old Clarence J. Latham guilty last week and recommended the minimum punishment for the misdemeanor - a $250 fine.

Latham tried to participate in the Trigg County Country Ham Festival Parade last year with a float featuring signs that promoted Democratic candidates and what Cadiz Police Chief Hollis Alexander has termed offensive language.

Lexington, KY – The Kentucky League of Cities and the Kentucky Association of Counties are taking different paths following internal spending scandals. League executive director Sylvia Lovely resigned last week. But at KACo, there's been no change in leadership, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Report Exposes Truck Safety Violations

Louisville, KY – With the Labor Day weekend fast approaching, a new report shows Kentuckians should take caution when traveling, particularly around commercial trucks. The analysis by the American Association of Justice puts Kentucky 11th worst in the nations in the number of trucking companies with safety violations. Ray DeLorenzi [DEE-lor-IN-zee] is spokesperson for the AAJ.
