Desai Hired as Associate Commissioner

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Education Department has a new associate commissioner to complement recently appointed Education Commissioner Terry Holliday. Hiren Desai assumed his duties yesterday. Desai had served in the Kentucky Finance and Administrative Cabinet. He will oversee the Education Department's finances, budget, and human resources.

Paris Man Arrested on Arson Charges

Paris, TN – A Paris man was charged with aggravated arson Monday in connection to a fire at his Aden Street rental home. Police arrested 39-year-old Jeffrey Neese after a meth lab in one of the house's closets caught fire and destroyed the structure. 20 firefighters battled the blaze for hours, and Oakland Volunteer Fire Department chief Patrick Petronico was injured with a laceration to his arm. Neese was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and is being with held without bond.

Woman Accused of Falsifying Report

Paducah, KY – McCracken County sheriff's deputies have arrested a Paducah woman they allege falsely reported a rape. Detective R.J. Caskey says officers responded Sunday to a sexual abuse call at Mount Carmel Cemetery. 34-year-old Vair B. Taylor said she had been raped by her boyfriend.

Hopkinsville Passes Digital Pawn Broker Reports (1st Reading)

Hopkinsville, KY – A city ordinance in Hopkinsville that will require pawn brokers to submit customer transaction data electronically to police may soon be a reality. The measure passed its first reading last night at the City Council meeting. It must now pass a second reading, expected September 15th. The ordinance doesn't change much to what pawn brokers already do, it just makes the process paperless. Hopkinsville police say the data provided by pawn shops makes it easier to recover stolen items and identify thieves.

KY: Boot Allowance Violates Law

Paducah, KY – Kentucky state Auditor Crit Luallen says McCracken County has violated a state law for at least 15 years by giving road department employees an annual boot allowance without requiring proof the money was used for boots. Judge-Executive Van Newberry says the county's contract with the union employees requires the cash payment. The Paducah Sun reports 15 employees receive the approximately $200 annual payment.

Lyon Co. EMS Director Assault Charges

Princeton, KY – The man in charge of Lyon County's emergency medical services allegedly assaulted a Caldwell County EMS employee Saturday. Police in Princeton charged Lyon County EMS Director Thomas Jenkins with felony assault, after he apparently threw a bucket of water during an altercation, injuring William Adams. The Paducah Sun reports it was unable to reach either Adams or Jenkins for comment.
