Taylor Arrested for $10k Embezzlement

Mayfield, KY – Mayfield police allege the former treasurer of the Mayfield-Graves County Baseball and Softball Association may have taken over $10,000 over two years from the organization's checking account. 38-year-old Michelle Taylor was arrested last week and charged with three counts of theft. Police began investigating Taylor when it was discovered the electricity bills for the playing fields had gone unpaid for months. According to the Paducah Sun, Taylor is scheduled to be arraigned in court January 6th.

Oxidized Bridges Save $1 Million Annually

Kentucky Dam Village, KY – The new Tennessee River bridge below Kentucky Dam may look a little rusty to the casual observer, and it is. But it's designed to. It was constructed with an oxidizing steel, and that makes the bridge cheaper to build and maintain. Department of Highways spokesman Keith Todd says the US-62/641 highway bridge and the railway bridge next to it will never have to be painted.

TN Legislators Discuss Traffic Cam Income to Cities

Nashville, TN – Some Tennessee state lawmakers are critical of cities' "red light camera" contracts with outside vendors. They're discussing limiting how funds the cameras generate are used.

Democratic Representative Ben West says a portion of the income could be earmarked for safety programs.

Republican Representative Richard Floyd says the contracts are about "revenue streams," regardless how much talk is about safety. Cities can currently use such money for anything.

Vendors Selling Less Tobacco to Minors

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services reports a reduction in the number of tobacco sales to minors. During a compliance survey this summer, 96.5 percent of tobacco outlets did not sell to people under 18. In the past ten years, compliance has increased sixteen points from 80.3 percent in 1999.

Fort Campbell Deployments Uncertain Following Obama Announcement

Fort Campbell, KY – Fort Campbell officials aren't sure if President Obama's troop surge announcement will affect their base. The base had previously planned to send around 11,000 troops in the spring. President Obama is calling for a surge of around 30-thousand more troops. Army spokesperson Cathy Gramling says brigades are prepared if more soldiers are called up. Close to 29,000 soldiers deploy out of Fort Campbell.
