Murray, KY – Next Wednesday, January 27, WKMS-FM, Murray State's listener-supported public radio service and NPR member station broadcasts President Obama's State of the Union Address starting at 8 p.m., followed by an NPR-hosted national call-in program.

Stumbo on Tax Overhaul

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says he expects to receive a bipartisan tax overhaul plan soon. He predicted today that it might be too much for lawmakers to handle writing a budget and revamping the tax code in the same legislative session. Talk of a sweeping overhaul of Kentucky's tax system has heated up since Governor Steve Beshear tied his budget in part to gambling revenues that most lawmakers think will not materialize.

Officer's Sentence Reduced in Detainee Murder

Fort Campbell, KY – An attorney for a Fort Campbell soldier convicted of murdering an Iraqi detainee says the officer has his sentence reduced to 15 years. Attorney Jack Zimmerman says he learned yesterday that Army Clemency and Parole Board cut five years off the 20-year sentence for 1st Lieutenant Michael Behenna. In February 2009 Behenna was sentenced by a military jury to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing an Iraqi detainee during an interrogation. The commanding general at Fort Campbell later reduced the sentence to 20 years.

Madisonville, KY – Wallace has managed the Hopkins County YMCA for years, and his concerns are extremely valid. According to statistics from non-profit organization, Trust for America's Health, Kentucky ranks fourth in the highest rate of childhood obesity and ranks 7th in adults.

Trigg County Gears Up for Liquor Sales

Cadiz, KY – It's been about 5 months since Trigg County passed an ordinance to end prohibition. Now, many businesses are applying for various licenses to sell alcohol: nine for retail packaged beer, seven for retail packaged liquor, and one restaurant has applied for liquor by the drink.
