Smithland Cancels Firework Display Due to Lack of Pyrotechnic Operator

Smithland residents will need to go elsewhere to see fireworks this year.

The Smithland Area Chamber of Commerce announced Friday it won’t be able to put on its usual riverfront Fourth of July fireworks display this year due to a change in operator regulations.

McConnell Visits Western Kentucky

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell will spend Monday morning visiting with constituents and later honor prominent Kentucky Senator Alben Barkley. The Senate Minority Leader plans to meet with Murray community leaders at 8:30 AM in the Robert O. Miller Conference Center, then travel to Benton for a 9:50 AM visit at Sugar and Spice Restaurant.

US 68/80 Traffic Delays Expected Monday

People planning to drive on US Highway 68/80 near the Eggners Ferry Bridge on Monday should plan for delays due to construction work on the new Lagoon Bridge.

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contractor will start a concrete deck pour at 4 a.m. on the new span at the west end of the Eggners Ferry construction site on Kentucky Lake. The contractor plans to finish work by noon.

Significant Inactive Facility at PGDP Site Demolished

Workers at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant are demolishing the last of 32 inactive facilities scheduled for removal as part of cleanup at the PGDP site.  The U.S. Department of Energy reports the C-410 Feed Plant will be razed to a slab by this fall, ridding the site of a structure contaminated with asbestos and the low-level radioactive compound uranium hexafluoride, or UF-6.
