Gambling Bill

Frankfort, KY – Expanded gambling will once again go before the Kentucky General Assembly. Democratic Representative Tom Burch has pre-filed a bill that would give counties the option of legalizing video lottery terminals, which are similar to slot machines. Burch says many forms of gambling are already legal in Kentucky.

"They have pull-tabs right now at charitable gaming, at bingos and things like that. If pull-tabs isn't a manual slot machine, I don't know what I'd call it. And that is legal."

Sales Tax Holiday

Owensboro, KY – An Owensboro legislator wants to declare a sales tax holiday for one week during this year in Kentucky. Democratic House Representative Jim Glenn says eliminating the state sales tax during the first week of August would help working families save money. The holiday would apply to clothing items that cost less than one-hundred dollars, and school supplies. Glenn says eliminating the six-percent tax would make a big difference for some households.

Earned Income Tax Credit

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has begun a campaign to urge low- and middle-income Kentuckians to apply for a federal earned income tax credit. Beshear announced this morning a list of nearly 200 free tax preparation sites where volunteers will help Kentuckians fill out their income tax forms. The Beshear administration lists the information on the state Web site, assistance-(dot)-ky-(dot)-gov. Workers who earn up to forty-one thousand dollars may be eligible for credits as high as forty-eight hundred dollars.

Bomb Threat

Robard, KY – Kentucky State Police have arrested a worker at a western Kentucky poultry processing plant for allegedly writing a bomb threat note. The KSP says it charged 20-year-old Gary Widner of Madisonville with second-degree terroristic threatening. An investigation identified Widner as the suspect after the note was found Wednesday afternoon in a rest room at a Tyson plant in Robards, Kentucky. A KSP news release says Widner confessed to writing and leaving the note. No bomb was found.

Murray, KY – Murray's MFA in Creative Writing begins its 5 night Winter Residency Reading Series Saturday, Jan. 4 with a presentation by MacArthur "Genius" and poet Linda Bierds whose work has earned her several prestigious national awards and publications. Her poems appear in prestigious national print venues like the New Yorker. Linda Bierds prefaces a reading of her poem "Sea of Tranquility."
