Hopkins Schools Sends Layoff Notifications

Madisonville, KY – School officials in Hopkins County have begun notifying teachers who may lose their jobs at the end of the school year. Assistant Superintendent Linda Zellich says employees in the arts and humanities would be first to go, since those areas have been cut from state assessments. The district is waiting to hear if some grant-funded positions will be renewed and how much stimulus money will go to the schools. Officials will announce more information on employee contracts at the May 4 board of education meeting.

Ellis Park Cuts Schedule

Henderson, KY – Ellis Park Horse Track in Henderson is cutting half of its summer racing schedule. Park owner Ron Geary says he can no longer compete with other states that offer much larger purses financed by gambling at their horse tracks. Kentucky's horse racing tracks fought for video lottery terminals during this year's legislative session, but came up empty-handed. Geary says lawmakers need to understand what's at stake.

Highway Safety Effort Begins

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is starting a new campaign for highway work zone safety. The program uses signs and advertisements to remind motorists to reduce speeds and eliminate distractions while driving through construction zones. Cabinet spokesperson Andrea Clifford says there will be many additional workers on the highways starting this month.

TN Abortion Bill Advances

Nashville, TN – A proposal that would impose greater limits on abortion is advancing in the Tennessee House of Representatives. The resolution passed the House Health and Human Resources Committee Tuesday and its companion bill was approved in the Senate last month. The legislation seeks to overturn a state Supreme Court ruling from 2000 that says abortion rights are protected by the state constitution. An amendment to the measure failed that would have allowed for abortions in cases of rape, incest and the health of the woman.
