Unemployment Rates

Hopkinsville, KY – The most recent Kentucky labor statistics puts Calloway County on the low end of the state unemployment scale. The county's 6-point-1 percent unemployment rate is the state's second lowest. Nearby Trigg County has an unemployment level double Calloway's. Cadiz Career Center Director Debbie Birdsong tells the Kentucky New Era recent plant closures, including Johnson Controls, have contributed to the rates. The state-wide average jobless rate is 7-point-8 percent.

"My Kentucky Home" Documentary

Eddyville, KY – Award-winning filmmaker Samuel Koltinsky is working on a series of documentaries chronicling the community histories and personal stories of Kentucky. Todd Hatton spoke with Kiltinsky about his work and the Lyon County installment of the series, one that brings together the legendary Cobb's Batter, the grandfather of Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of Jazz Age author F. Scott Fitzgerald the family of journalist and author Irvin S. Cobb and the establishment of Land Between the Lakes.

Ken Winters on Student Assessment Bill

Murray, KY – Republican Kentucky Senator Ken Winters, of Murray, and Senate President David Williams, Republican-Burkesville are sponsoring the bill which would end the current system of student assessment by 2012. The bill proposes the removal of open-response questions from the state's end-of-year student assessments in favor of a national norm-referenced test augmented by additional multiple-choice tests to cover the state's core content. Kate Lochte has more about it with Senator Winters.
