Governor Seeks Federal Aid for Storm Damaged Kentucky

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is moving forward with plans to seek a federal disaster declaration, in connection with storms that ravaged Central and Eastern Kentucky over the weekend and claimed three lives. Beshear says at least 18 counties have declared states of emergency, but that could change.

Storms Hit Illinois, Pass Over Western Kentucky

Murray, KY – Weather officials are predicting strong storms for Southeastern Missouri and Southern Illinois today, but Western Kentucky may miss most of the severe weather. National Weather Service Forecaster Chris Knolls says the Purchase area can expect a slight risk of storms this afternoon into late evening. Most of the Pennyrile will be rain free. Far southern Illinois, where many people are still without power from last week's storms, can expect a chance of storms into the night. A wind advisory is also in effect for the region.

KY Unemployment Benefits Extended

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky workforce development officials say they will accept claims for extended unemployment benefits. The Extended Benefits program provides up to 20 additional weeks of federally-funded unemployment insurance to workers who have exhausted state and federal emergency extensions. The Office of Employment and Training begins notifying eligible individuals in the next few weeks by mail. For more on the Extended Benefits program visit the OET's website.

Clarks River Limb Removal

Benton, KY – The Marshall County Fiscal Court is seeking funding to help clean up miles of tree limb debris in Clarks River brought on by January's ice storms. Most of the funding will come from a USDA Emergency Watershed Protection grant, with the county picking up twenty-five percent of the cost. District Conservationist Diana Angle says the seventy-nine thousand dollar grant will facilitate cleanup at accessible river areas and help prevent flooding.
