Southern Baptists Relate to a Changing World

Louisville, KY – The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest Protestant organization in the United States with 16 million members. This week over eight-thousand church representatives were in Louisville for the SBC's Annual Meeting. Angela Hatton has this interview with Kentucky Baptist Convention Executive Director Doctor Bill Mackey about the meeting and the future of the Southern Baptist denomination.

Convention Board May Seek Foreclosure on Executive Inn

Paducah, KY – Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center Chairman Jim Sigler says the corporation could file legal action to assume ownership of the Executive Inn without having to buy it. The option would come by seizing the hotel through foreclosure. The convention center corporation owns the land the hotel sits on and leases it to current owner Bhupinder Singh. Sigler says Singh has violated the lease because the hotel is closed and not being maintained.

Mayor Piper to Urge Tax Hike

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Johnny Piper says he is submitting a recommendation to increase taxes to the City Council. During yesterday's Parks and Recreation Committee meeting Piper said that an early draft of the city's budget forecast a $7 million shortfall.
Piper says he would prefer to dip into the city's fund-balance than raise taxes, but doing so would draw the account below the minimum set by city code. The Mayor's office is currently looking into many options and the budget is still considered a work in progress.

Highway 80 Project Continues

Murray, KY – Contractors are continuing work on Kentucky Highway 80 east of Murray and the 68/80 corridor through Land Between the Lakes. Gravel and dirt work continue along the Murray section, but weather delays have slowed progress. Officials estimate completion sometime in spring 2010. Work on the 68/80 corridor through LBL could be completed as early as November. Workers plan to close traffic on westbound lanes in July to begin construction there. Motorists should drive carefully through the work zone.

Spring Creek Baptist Youth Minister Arrested on Sex Charges

Clarksville, TN – A former Spring Creek Baptist Youth Minister is under arrest in Clarksville for allegedly engaging in sex crimes against minors. Police have charged 24-year-old Jonathan Tyler Giles with three counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, sexual battery, and two counts of soliciting a minor. Giles resigned June 15 from his post, where he was responsible for more than 70 teens and pre-teens at the church.

Police Find More Than $11,000 in Stolen Property

Murray, KY – The Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force found more than $11,000 in stolen property yesterday when they executed a search warrant. When police searched the possessions of Matthew Bumpus, they recovered merchandise, construction tools and lottery tickets stolen from Murray businesses. Bumpus is charged with Trafficking in Controlled Substances and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Charges are pending for Receiving Stolen Property.

Henry Co. Sheriff Looking for Missing 16-Year-Old

Paris, TN – Henry County Sheriff's Department is still searching for a missing 16-year-old boy who ran away from his home early yesterday morning. Investigator Gary Vandiver says Blane Seeber left his Routon Truck Stop Road home near Henry sometime after midnight Wednesday. He has blue eyes, brown hair, stands at five-feet, nine-inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. Seeber was last seen wearing khaki shorts and a Los Angeles Lakers basketball jersey.
