Correctional Officers Among Layoffs

Vienna, IL – Employees at the Vienna, Illinois, prison are among four hundred correctional officers losing their jobs. The state decided to lay off the workers as part of massive budget cuts. Governor Pat Quinn plans to lay off as many as a thousand state employees during a second phase of cuts. The Metropolis Planet reports the cuts will save 125-million dollars a year. Job cuts take effect September 30.

Kentucky Sheriffs' Boys & Girls Ranch

Gilbertsville, Ky. – Some call it the best kept secret in Western Kentucky. For more than three decades, a joint effort by the Kentucky Sheriffs' Association brings kids from all over the state to a summer camp in Gilbertsville. Our correspondent Jacque Day gives a glimpse of a day at the Kentucky Sheriffs' Association Boys and Girls Ranch.

I-24 Crash Causes Closure

Paducah, KY – Lanes on Interstate-24 between Exits 7 and 11 are open again after a traffic accident. A vehicle carrying several passengers lost control on the road and overturned. Emergency crews were on the scene until around three o'clock. Injuries in the crash were severe. One fatality has been reported.

Illinois Foreclosures Up

Chicago, IL – The expiration of an anti-foreclosure law in Illinois has caused a spike in foreclosure activity. A report released today by RealtyTrac shows more than 14-thousand foreclosure filings in Illinois last month. One in every 361 housing units in the state received a foreclosure filing. That's 63 percent higher than July of last year and eighth-highest nationally.

Ex-Officer Sues Clarksville Police Department

Clarksville, TN – A former police officer is suing the Clarksville Police Department in federal court, alleging racial discrimination and retaliation for a previous lawsuit. Raymond Davis Sr. was fired for supposedly lying about pursuing an intoxicated driver last December. The Clarksville Leaf Chronicle reports Davis was a domestic violence investigator on the force and has worked for the police department for about 15 years. The city reached an out-of-court settlement of $150,000 with Davis in 2007 for his previous lawsuit.
