President honors teachers

Mayfield, KY – A western Kentucky teacher is among math and science teachers to receive the Presidential Award for Math and Science. President Obama recently announced the names of more than a hundred science, math and engineering teachers and mentors earlier this month. Science teacher Keri Dowdy of Sedalia Elementary School in Mayfield will be receiving the award at the White House this fall.

Former Marine Fleeces Toys for Tots

Paducah, KY – Former head of Paducah's Toys for Tots will serve two years in jail for stealing thousands of dollars from the in 2008. Judge Craig Clymer sentenced Jason Carper yesterday to two years in the McCracken County Jail. Carper must also pay ten-thousand-five-hundred-dollars in restitution to the charity. Carper may be eligible for shock probation in 30 to 60 days.

TVA Consultants Criticize Coal Ash Operations

Kingston, TN – Consultants hired by the Tennessee Valley Authority report widespread problems with how federal utility is running and maintaining its coal ash storage operations. The report by McKenna Long and Aldridge of Atlanta follows the massive spill of more than 5 million cubic yards of coal ash December 22nd at the Kingston Fossil Plant 40 miles west of Knoxville.

Paducah's '10 AQS Forecast Still Hazy

Paducah, KY – Whether or not Paducah will host the American Quilter's Society 2010 Quilt Show may hinge on what co-creator Bill Schroeder learns this Friday in Frankfort. Schroeder plans to meet with state Tourism Secretary Marcheta Sparrow to learn if the organization is eligible for a grant to help pay rental costs, set to exceed $150,000.
