Amish Man Drowns in Trigg Co.

Trigg County, KY – An Amish man from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, drowned while swimming in a Trigg County farm pond over the weekend. Department of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer Ken Richards says 20-year-old Jonas Beilor died Saturday while after taking off his life jacket while swimming with friends. Richards says Beilor was in the area to help build a house in the Amish community.

Fancy Farm, KY – Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson can now brag he's been to two Fancy Farm Picnics. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh watched Abramson mingle with the crowd at Saturday's 129th annual picnic in rural Graves County.

Farmers Markets Popular in IL

Springfield, IL – Federal government data shows the number of Illinois farmers markets has nearly tripled in the last 10 years. The data also shows farmers in Illinois sell about $114 million in specialty crops a year.

Delayne Reeves is a marketing specialist with the Illinois Department of Agriculture. She's in charge of grant money to support locally grown foods. Reeves says there's demand from the public for farmers market fruits and vegetables.

Pepsi Buys Henry Co. Snack Firm

Paris, TN – The Pepsi Company has bought Premier Snacks of Henry County and will add new jobs. Some of these positions will be filled by previous Premier Snacks employees. The Paris Post-Intelligencer reports this is the latest in a series of purchases by Pepsi Mid America Food Services. The local snack company will also open a new facility as part of the purchase.

Leech Continues to Stand Trial

Mayfield, KY – Prosecution is continuing to call witnesses today against the last defendant to stand trial in the Jessica Currin murder case. Lynn Austin Leach faces two counts of tampering and one perjury count. Currin was murdered in 2000 and her body left burned behind a middle school in Mayfield. Leech's trial resumes Tuesday.

Illinois Budget Plans Announced

Southern Illinois – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced this afternoon that he's spreading a limited supply of money among state government agencies. The governor put much of the money into grants for local services such as mental health and drug counseling. Programs for the elderly and for abused children will also get funding. Quinn says the budget leaves Illinois with about $1.4 billion in unmet needs, and that Medicaid, preschool and college scholarships aren't getting enough money.
