Violence Prevention Grants Awarded

Murray, KY – Nine western Kentucky counties will receive federal grants totaling more than 50 thousand dollars to fund violence prevention and substance abuse programs. The grant money will support local Champions Coalitions - made up of local leaders, educators, professionals and concerned citizens who work to provide area youth with safe and constructive alternatives to drug use. The funding comes from the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet.

TDOT to complete investigation

Nashville, TN – Tennessee state officials say a 2-year-old investigation into the Governor's Highway Safety Office should be completed by next month. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is looking into whether the office used federal funds wisely. TDOT spokeswoman Julie Oaks would not elaborate on allegations made about the safety office.

Burn Bans Lifted in 4 Western KY Counties

Murray, KY – Though the fall burn season is still active, fire departments across western Kentucky have lifted burn bans in effect since late September. Calloway, McCracken, Caldwell and Lyon counties lifted their burn bans after steady rain in the early part of last week eased drought conditions. Murray Fire Marshal Dickie Walls says during fall burn season, residents can only have fires between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and must obtain a burn permit. Kentucky fall forest fire hazard season began October 1st.
