MSU Weekend Sports Recap

Murray, KY – The Murray State Racer football team fell to UT Martin's Skyhawks Saturday with a 24-38 loss. In other Racer news, the Women's soccer team beat Evansville, 1-to-zero at Cutchin Field yesterday. The win improves their season to 7-7-2 overall.

No Charges Planned in Child Shooting

Paducah, KY – McCracken County Commonwealth Attorney Dan Boaz says no charges will be filed in connection with the October 10th shooting of 10-year-old Kyler "Beau" Mathis. Mathis was target shooting with two other children in his grandmother's back yard when a .22 caliber rifle accidentally discharged; the bullet struck Mathis in the forehead. Mathis is in Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville. The Paducah Sun reports his condition has been upgraded from critical to stable.

Tree Planting Planned at Fort Campbell

Clarksville, TN – The city of Clarksville is planning a display of trees to honor the 101st Airbone Division. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture will provide half of the $8,000 the city needs to plant 40 trees at an intersection near Fort Campbell either late this fall or early next spring. The trees would be arranged as a circle enclosing a smaller star-shaped formation that would be visible from overhead. The design will include shumard oaks, Kentucky coffeetrees and bur oaks.

McCracken May Build Jail Annex

Paducah, KY – McCracken County Jailer Bill Adams is expected to ask the fiscal court tonight for permission to begin a construction project adding on a 130-bed annex to the Regional Jail. 410 prisoners are currently housed in the building, which reached capacity at 342. Adams plans to use the annex for low-risk inmates involved in work programs. The addition would also allow the county to reinstate a work-release program. According to the Paducah Sun, if all goes smoothly, the add-on will be open in early 2011.
