Reward Upped for School Vandalism

Kevil, KY – The reward for information about vandalism at Ballard Memorial High School is going up. A private business has promised a thousand dollars for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, bringing the total reward to two thousand dollars. The Ballard County Sheriff's Office and the Board of Education are the other donors. Tuesday night vandals apparently shot at the front of the high school. Investigators found nine bullet holes in a two story window and another at the back of a veterans' monument.

Nunn Arraigned in Murder Case

Lexington, KY – Former Kentucky legislator Steve Nunn has been arraigned in Fayette District Court on a murder charge. Nunn appeared by video from the Fayette County jail for the brief hearing. He looked tired and had a five-o'clock shadow. His attorney, Astrida Lemkins entered a not guilty plea on Nunn's behalf. Bond was denied. Lemkins says a preliminary hearing in the case is set for next Friday.

Metropolis Sewer Water Rates Increase

Massac, Ill – The Metropolis Illinois City Council approved rate increases for water and sewer services. By October first water rates should double to sixteen dollars and sewer increase to twenty-five dollars. Rates should cap in 2014 at about thirty-five to forty dollars. The Metropolis Planet reports the city is one of two in southern Illinois with combined sewer and water drains. The E-P-A is working Metropolis to separate the systems for environmental reasons.

Country rock poet Brett Eugene Ralph comes to Murray State

Murray, KY – Murray State's Reading series brings poet Brett Eugene Ralph to the Clara Eagle Art Gallery in the Price Doyle Fine Arts Building Thursday. This summer, Sarabande Books of Louisville published Black Sabattical, a collection of Ralph's poems, in its Linda Bruckheimer Series in Kentucky Literature. A-former-punk-rocker-now-a-country-rocker, the poet teaches at Hopkinsville Community College and spoke with Kate Lochte from his office.

Threat Level "Widespread" in Kentucky

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's flu activity level is now widespread according to the Kentucky Department of Public Health. Widespread activity is the highest level of flu activity. It indicates increased outbreaks in at least half of the regions in a state. Kentucky Public Health Commissioner William Hacker says most of the cases are probably swine flu, because it's still too early in the year for widespread seasonal flu. Murray State University is reporting eighteen individuals with flu-like symptoms.

Magistrate's Trial Set for April

Madisonville, KY – A jury trial is set for Hopkins County Magistrate Wesley Lynn. Lynn faces sexual abuse charges stemming from his time as a paramedic at Trover Health System. The Madisonville Messenger reports Lynn has two other indictments for sexual assault, rape, sodomy, and harassment. In total, seven women have accused him of misconduct. The alleged incidents occurred between 2006 and 2008, when Lynn resigned from the hospital. He maintains his innocence. The trial is set for April 13th.

85-year-old rapist

Montgomery County, TN – A Montgomery County Tennessee man is charged with 2 counts of aggravated statutory rape. Eighty-five-year-old John P. Van Artsdalen is charged with raping a mentally disabled teenager in March of 2008. Though Artsdalen will serve no jail time, he will serve two consecutive 4-year-terms on probation. He was only charged on two of the five counts originally filed against him.
