KOHS presents highway safety grants

Murray, KY – Several western Kentucky agencies have received a portion of a hundred and twenty four thousand dollar grant from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety. The money will help the agencies with programs to curb impaired driving, speeding, seatbelt usage, and dangerous driving practices. The money will also help to educate the public on child safety seats and seatbelt usage. Seventeen more deaths have occurred so far in 2009 on Kentucky highways, compared to the same time last year.

Ky. Ed. Commissioner Speaks on No Child Left Behind

Western Kentucky – This week, the Kentucky Department of Education released the 2009 No Child Left Behind Adequate Yearly Progress Report. It reveals some startling numbers: only 60 percent of Kentucky's schools are meeting math, reading and other goals outlined by the federal act. This marks a 13 percent drop from last year. Jacque Day speaks with Kentucky's education commissioner Terry Holliday to gain some insight on what these numbers mean, and their ramifications on our schools and communities.

Possible Swine Flu Death

Caldwell County, KY – Health officials are investigating the death of a thirteen old Caldwell County girl that may be related to swine flu. Cabinet for Health and Family Services spokeswoman Gwenda Bond says tests results are expected early next week to determine if H-one N-one caused the death. Bill Myers with the Crittenden County Coroner's Office tells WPSD-TV the girl died Wednesday in Marion after being taken to the Hospital with flu-like symptoms.

Illinois Unemployment Rates

Chicago, Ill –
The state of Illinois released their unemployment rates earlier this week. The state's average is down from ten-point-four percent in July to nine-point-nine percent for the month of August. In Southern Illinois, Hardin County rates are highest with twelve-point-two percent. Massac County has the lowest, with nine percent.
