Kingston, TN – Consultants hired by the Tennessee Valley Authority report widespread problems with how federal utility is running and maintaining its coal ash storage operations. The report by McKenna Long and Aldridge of Atlanta follows the massive spill of more than 5 million cubic yards of coal ash December 22nd at the Kingston Fossil Plant 40 miles west of Knoxville.
Paducah, KY – Whether or not Paducah will host the American Quilter's Society 2010 Quilt Show may hinge on what co-creator Bill Schroeder learns this Friday in Frankfort. Schroeder plans to meet with state Tourism Secretary Marcheta Sparrow to learn if the organization is eligible for a grant to help pay rental costs, set to exceed $150,000.
Paducah, KY – Paducah's new police chief is already being put to the test. Chief James Berry's first few days on the job will include a physical, drug test, psychological exam, and polygraph test.
Human Resources Director Jonathan Perkins says Berry's tests are the same faced by any other police officer. Perkins says it's good for Berry to have a personal knowledge of what his future hires have to go through.
Berry brings more than 30 years' experience to the Paducah Police Department.
Lexington, KY – The Kentucky League of Cities has suspended credit card use by the group's top officials following a newspaper investigation into its spending practices. The Lexington Herald-Leader has reported the group's top three executives accrued $300,000 in credit card expenses in three years. And last week, League of Cities officials acknowledged a credit card charge at a Las Vegas strip club.
Madisonville, KY – Tomorrow marks the grand opening of the Hopkins County Convention Center. Executive Director Dana Brown says the twenty-seven thousand-square-foot facility has been open since April. The event tomorrow will be the first large-scale function, kicking off this year's Hopkins County Fair. The convention center is housed on the fairgrounds. Brown is currently courting events from across the state, including boat and gun shows.
