Mullen to Discuss Afghan Strategy with Ft. Campbell Troops

Fort Campbell, KY – Many Fort Campbell soldiers have been expecting to head to Afghanistan next year, so the recent call for a troop buildup there could provide confirmation before the holidays.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen will discuss the new strategy for Afghanistan during a visit to the post today.

KY Farmers Exceed $4b in Receipts

Frankfort, KY – Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has congratulated Kentucky farmers for surpassing $4 billion in cash receipts for the fourth year in a row. Farmer says the state's agriculture industry achieved the feat despite economic challenges.

The University of Kentucky reported that cash receipts for 2009 will total over 4 and a quarter billion dollars, 11% lower than last year's record total but even with the five-year average.

2 Found Dead in Clarksville Apartment

Clarksville, TN – Two men were found shot to death last night in a Clarksville apartment. Police describe the men as one in his early 20's and the other in his early 50's. They have yet to be identified. The men were found after a 911 caller reported seeing what looked like a lifeless body through one of the apartment's windows. Investigators say there was no sign of forced entry.

KY Grants Promote Use of Waste Tires

Frankfort, KY – The Commonwealth is accepting grant proposals for projects in Kentucky that promote the use of recycled waste tires for such things as athletic fields and playgrounds. The Energy and Environment Cabinet will also consider funding research and development proposals.

KY to Open Execution Protocol to Public Hearings

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky will not appeal a ruling striking down how it adopted its lethal injection protocol and will hold public hearings before putting a new execution process in place.

Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet spokeswoman Jennifer Brislin says a regulation will be filed with the state later this month to start the public hearing process.

KSP Seeking Projects to Reduce Teen Drinking

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky State Police are seeking projects to support with grant funding as part of an effort to reduce underage drinking. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that KSP serves as state administrator for the Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws grant.

KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer says enforcement must be accompanied by education to make people fully aware of the dangers involved with underage drinking. The grant application package is available through the Kentucky Justice Cabinet Web site.

Lone Oak loses to Boyle County

Paducah, KY – Lone Oak football lost to Boyle County this morning for the state championship in their division. Both schools were undefeated for the season. WPSD reports Boyle County pulling ahead in double overtime with a final score of 42 to 39. Three other western Kentucky teams compete for a state title this weekend. The undefeated Fort Campbell Falcons are playing now, with Mayfield and Paducah Tilghman [til-men] taking the field in Bowling Green tomorrow.
