Swine Flu Death Reported in Madison Co.

Richmond, KY – Another swine flu death is being reported in Kentucky. Madison County Health Department officials say a 59-year-old man died from complications caused by the virus. They report the man had significant underlying health issues. It was the first swine flu death reported in Madison County and the 12th in the state.

Conway Wants US Supreme Court to Hear KY Case

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway says he will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a state Supreme Court ruling that loosened restrictions on where convicted sex offenders can live. Lawmakers passed a law in 2006 barring sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools, daycare centers, and other places where children congregate. The state Supreme Court called the law unconstitutional because it applied retroactively to sex offenders convicted before the restrictions were imposed.

US Senate Approves Funding for KY Projects

Washington D.C. – The U.S. House and Senate yesterday approved almost 15 million dollars in funding for several Kentucky infrastructure projects in their interior appropriations bill. The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will receive a little over 8 million dollars, and the Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge will receive 7 hundred and fifty thousand dollars to continue land acquisition. The bill will now go to President Obama for his signature.

Pre-paid college tuition programs face deficits

Frankfort, KY – In the last 2 decades, families around the country have invested in state funds that pledge to cover college costs, regardless of how much tuition increases. The so-called 529 funds allow parents to pay future tuition costs at today's lower prices. But now, most state-run programs are in the red. Kentucky Public Radio's Lisa Autry has this report.
