Glema Mahr Passes Away

Madisonville, KY – Madisonville's Glema Mahr, a dedicated farmer, community volunteer and arts supporter passed away Tuesday. Ms. Mahr volunteered for numerous organizations and served on the governing boards of many. She has been recognized for her outstanding community support over the years. In 2005 Madisonville Community College's Fine Art's Center was named the Glema Mahr Center for the arts, Mrs. Mahr volunteered for the center for more than 10 years. She was 92. There will be a memorial/celebration of her life at the center December 13.

CPE: Too Much Recall in Classrooms

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says too much instruction in the classroom is recall based.' He says in today's society that information can be found on the internet. Holliday says it's important to go back and emphasis the original intent of Kentucky Education Reforms which include more problem solving techniques

"Kids have to be able to use the stuff a year later they can't memorize and forget, we've given kids permission to forget is what we've done."

Controlled Burns of Debris Begin in Western KY

Paducah, KY – Kentucky officials have hired contractors to burn ice storm debris in the 12 western-most counties. State Department of Highways District 1 Chief Engineer Jim LeFevre says officials would rather the trees and limbs be used as fuel, but there's too much of it and it contains too much dirt and other materials to be recycled.

LeFevre says the state has to remove it from land which owners leased as space to pile the debris as it was cleared from roads. Controlled burns of debris have begun in McCracken and Lyon counties.

32,000 Children Added to Health Insurance Program

Frankfort, KY – Governor Steve Beshear says his administration has been enrolling more than 2,600 children per month into the Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program, or KCHIP, for low-income families.
