Bunning blames McConnell for Low Funds

Bowling Green, KY – First-quarter fundraising totals for Kentucky's U.S. Senate race are due at the end of the month. In his weekly teleconference with reporters, incumbent Jim Bunning blamed his Republican colleague Mitch McConnell for stalling his fundraising efforts. The Senate Minority Leader has met with Texas Senator John Cornyn, who chairs the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Public Reception for Police Chief Candidate

Paducah, KY – The City of Paducah is holding a meet-and-greet reception tomorrow to introduce the public to Police Chief hopeful James Berry. The 5:30 p.m. reception, in the Atrium of City Hall, is similar to a previous event for other candidates. Those in attendance are invited to submit comments and impressions of Berry. The Paducah City Commission will interview Berry on Thursday. He is currently Police Chief in Manchester, Connecticut. The commission is also considering four other candidates.

Herald-Leader Cuts Jobs

Lexington, KY – The Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper is laying off 49 full-time employees and cutting the salaries of remaining workers. Publisher Timothy M. Kelly says the staff cuts account for about 15 percent of the company's total full-time employee base. The plan includes a 5 percent wage reduction for employees who make over $25,000 annually. Newspaper executives will have their pay cut by 10 percent and bonus plans will be eliminated for 2009.

Judge Recommends Lower Sentence for Soldier

Fort Campbell, KY – A judge says he will recommend a lighter sentence for a Fort Campbell soldier convicted of murdering an Iraqi detainee. Colonel Theodore Dixon, however, denied 1st Lieutenant Michael Behenna's motion for a mistrial. A military jury last month convicted Behenna of murder and sentenced him to 25 years in prison. Behenna's attorney, Jack Zimmermann, has said he will appeal if the judge denied the motion. Colonel Dixon plans to recommend that Behenna serve no more than 18 years.
