H1N1 death in Oak Grove

Oak Grove, KY – The Christian County Health Department confirms a 37-year-old Oak Grove woman has died from the H1N1 virus. The woman, whose name has not been released, died on Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She died of cardiopulmonary failure related to complications from the H1N1 virus. Other underlying medical conditions were cited. This is Christian County's second H1N1 related death.

Mongiardo Picks Up Endorsement from Former Gov.

Frankfort, KY – Former Kentucky governor Julian Carroll has endorsed Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat. Mongiardo's campaign announced the endorsement Thursday. Carroll, who served as governor from 1974-1979 and currently serves in the state Senate, called Mongiardo "an independent Democrat" who would put Kentucky first. Mongiardo is running against Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway for the Democratic nomination to replace retiring two-term Sen. Jim Bunning.

WKN May Layoff All Employees

Paducah, KY – Paducah-based, river-towing firm Western Kentucky Navigation has lost a major contract. President Dave Dewey tells the Paducah Sun in mid-March the company will no longer operate towboats for American Commercial Lines and will have to lay off all its workers if it doesn't quickly generate new business. Dewey says the recession has hurt river industry, especially in the past six months, with a diminished demand to ship items.

Counter-Gambling Bill Could Be Filed Friday

Frankfort, KY – Senate President David Williams says he plans to file a measure that would allow voters a say in gambling proposals in Kentucky. Williams says he may file as early as Friday. The measure would require a longstanding proposal to legalize slots at horse tracks or any other such proposal to be ratified by voters in a ballot referendum. It's one of the latest twists in the ongoing debate about whether Kentucky should legalize gambling.

Education Standards Vote Next Month

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky state education officials have scheduled a rare joint meeting for next month to vote on a new set of common standards for math and English, and approval would make the Commonwealth the first state to adopt the national program.

The new standards for grades K-12 were developed by a national group of education experts and most states are considering adopting them. In Kentucky, they would replace those wiped out by the legislature last year in its call for new state content standards and a new system for testing students.

Wife as accomplice in murder

Murray, KY – A Grand Jury has charged another person in connection to murder in Calloway County. The grand jury indicted Kayla Workman this morning on complicity to commit murder charges. Workman and her husband Jayson both of Murray are implicated in the December 23rd stabbing death of 24 year old Herbert Donald. Earlier this week, the grand jury indicted Jayson for murder. Both Workmans are being lodged in the Calloway County Jail.
