Report Tallies Storm Damage

Frankfort, KY – A Kentucky Public Service Commission report has compiled damage figures from last year's Hurricane Ike and January's ice storm. PSC executive director Jeff Derouen says winds from remnants of Hurricane Ike in September 2008 caused about 595 million dollars in reported damages. Derouen says the ice storm caused at least 616 million dollars. He says the overall report is due out later this week. The January ice storm downed trees and power lines, causing 769,000 power outages. It was blamed for at least 36 deaths.

Winters Squashes Appointment Rumors

Murray, KY – State Senator Ken Winters is denouncing rumors that Governor Steve Beshear is considering appointing him to a cabinet post. He says he has not been contacted by the governor's office. Speculation has circulated that Beshear would appoint Winters as the Secretary of the Education and Workforce Development. The governor has been accused of using appointments to regain Democratic control of the Senate. The Paducah Sun reports if Winters is offered the post, he will likely decline it.

Troops Hone Artillery Skills to Cut Afghan Deaths

Fort Campbell, KY – Soldiers headed for Afghanistan are getting new training on when to use high-powered weapons as the U.S. looks to reduce civilian deaths. Troops with the 101st Airborne Division have been spending weeks in the woods on the Kentucky-Tennessee line learning new tactics to fight the Taliban. The updated methods include using smoke bombs and smaller explosions to let spotters get close enough to targets to decide whether to launch a heavy assault.

General Assembly Budget Activity

Frankfort, KY – With Kentucky's 2010 legislative session just seven weeks off, budget-related activity is picking up in Frankfort. Despite recent budget cuts and tax hikes, Kentucky is still facing a revenue shortfall of 161-million dollars this fiscal year. But with legislative elections looming next year, House budget chairman Rick Rand seriously doubts the next biennial budget will include tax increases.

"We raised cigarette and alcohol taxes in February and I think the likelihood of us raising taxes again are very, very slim."
