National civil rights veteran delivers King Holiday Cherokee Park keynote

Aurora, Ky. – More than 100 people turned out to Cherokee State Park in Aurora on Monday's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday to observe the opening of the historic dining room building. Situated near Kenlake, Cherokee was a resort opened in 1951 to serve African-Americans during segregation. Attendees included original park-goers, several local officials and state representative Will Coursey. The keynote speaker was civil rights-era activist Colia LaFayette Clark.

Situated near Kenlake, Cherokee was a resort opened in 1951 to serve African-Americans during segregation. Several original park-goers attended the event, as well as national civil rights figure Colia Clark and Kentucky Representative Will Coursey.

Domestic Violence Rally

Frankfort, KY – New legislation would get Kentucky off a list of states that don't allow domestic violence protective orders to be issued in the cases of unmarried couples who don't have children together. Kentucky Domestic Violence Association Executive Director Sherry Currens says House Bill 30 would let women get such a court order if the person they're dating becomes violent. Currens says it will also help end any misconception that domestic violence only happens between husbands and wives.

Local Haitian relief

Murray, KY – United Methodist Churches in Murray, Mayfield and Paris are collecting money and health kits for Haitian relief. Disaster Relief Coordinator Bill Carr says the effort includes 450 churches in his Conference, based out of Memphis. Carr says first Requested item for kits include wash clothes, tooth brushes and other hygiene tools. 100 percent of the money will fund medical expenses and long term rebuilding costs. On January 31st all monies and kits will be taken to Paris, and then flown to Haiti later in February.
