Carlisle Jury Finds Ellis Guilty of Arson

Bardwell, KY – A Carlisle Circuit Court jury has found Jeremy Ellis guilty of setting the fire that destroyed the county's courthouse over two years ago. They're recommending he serve 12 years in prison. The Paducah Sun reports the 21-year-old Ellis testified in his own defense, telling the jury he was just trying to look tough when he bragged to more than one witness about setting the fire. Circuit Judge Tim Langford is expected to sentence Ellis tomorrow.

House Budget Agreement

Murray, KY – After weeks of behind-the-scenes work, Kentucky House leaders appear very close to agreement on a new state budget plan. As expected, the first year of the budget is dependent on another round of federal stimulus dollars, says Speaker Greg Stumbo.

"All the indicators are, that there will be. The President's recommended it. I sat with Cong Chandler Friday night and he thinks the President will approve it," Stumbo says. "It may not be called stimulus, but it will a form of aid."

Greer's bill passes committee

Frankfort, KY –
A bill boosting Kentucky's dropout age to 18 by July 2014 easily cleared the House Education Committee 21-0. The bill's sponsor, Rep. Jeff Greer, says current Kentucky law allowing students to drop out at age 16 with parental consent, is antiquated.

"The current policy has been on the books since 1920 - 1920! The law was relevant back then. Back then it was OK if you had a weak mind and a strong back. There was work out there for you. Times have changed."

Graves County Cheerleaders Win National Title

Graves County Schools

Murray, KY – Graves County High School's Co-Ed Cheerleader's brought home their fourth national championship in five years Tuesday. The cheerleaders won the Universal Cheerleading Association national title over the weekend in Orlando, Florida. The team competes for the championship of the Kentucky Association of Pep Organization Sponsors Saturday, Feb. 20.

More Charges for Juveniles Robbery Suspects

Pembroke, KY – The Kentucky State Police has filed additional charges against the four juveniles who allegedly stole from Mennonite communities in Christian and Todd Counties. Police arrested the four last week. They also face wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, and evading police charges. They remain lodged in the McCracken County Juvenile Detention Center. An adult charged with the crimes will face additional charges when he appears before a grand jury.

Kentucky Toyota Plant Plans One Shut Down, Considers Another

Georgetown, KY – The Georgetown, Kentucky, Toyota manufacturing plant will halt production for one day later this month, and could add a couple more shut down days in March. About 25-hundred people work on a line in Georgetown that produces Camrys and Avalons, two models involved in the company's recall of eight-point-five million vehicles. Plant spokesperson Rick Hesterberg says the February 26th shut-down was ordered because of lagging sales at dealerships.
