The Zoo says Arki, a female, was 28 years old and died from unknown causes on Wednesday. Arki came to Louisville in 2011 from the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. A news release from the Louisville Zoo says polar bears usually live into their mid-20s. Arki was considered one of the most prolific polar bears with five successful litters. One of the two remaining polar bears at the Louisville Zoo, 3-year-old Siku, is Arki's grandson. The Zoo says a necropsy will be performed on Arki to determine the cause of death.
Fri, 17 May 2013 12:42:30 +0000 John Walker and The Associated Press 31682 at http://wkms.org Louisville Zoo Polar Bear Dies Youth Report: Not So Fast, All About LBL's Turtle Derby http://wkms.org/post/youth-report-not-so-fast-all-about-lbls-turtle-derby
Earlier this month, over 16 million viewers tuned in to watch the 139th annual Kentucky Derby. To celebrate the event, the Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes held their own, much slower race: the Kentucky Turtle Derby. WKMS Youth Reporter Aaron Sikkel covered the event and sat down with Naturalist Aviva Yasgur to learn about how turtles contribute to the region's ecosystem. This article features the full version of the interview.

Special thanks to Aaron's mom, Claire Fuller, for coordinating the interview and taking photos. However, the pace still keeps them well behind schedule. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported yesterday that 28% of the nation's cornfields have been planted, up from just 12% a week ago. But the latest numbers are well short of the 65% of the crop that already was in the ground by this date over the previous five years. At this time last year, 85% of the corn was planted. He's a playful and energetic Labrador puppy. He loved meeting everyone at the station and was very curious to find snug hiding spots underneath chairs and tables even though he's bigger than he thinks. When we brought him into the studio, he climbed into his foster mom's lap and went right to sleep! We think he'd be a great fit for a family with kids and plenty of energy. Here's more information about Hunter on petfinder.com.

Wed, 08 May 2013 16:49:38 +0000 Matt Markgraf 31566 at http://wkms.org Puppies Sound Good: Meet Hunter TN Health Department Warns Of Mosquito-Borne Illness http://wkms.org/post/tn-health-department-warns-mosquito-borne-illness

The Tennessee Department of Health is urging people to protect themselves from viruses transmitted by mosquitoes.
