Quinn Issues Emergency Declaration After Illinois Flooding

Gov. Pat Quinn has issued an emergency declaration following the flooding and severe weather affecting areas across Illinois yesterday.

The action allows the state to access federal resources including generators, pump systems sandbags and additional funds. It is a step below a disaster emergency declaration.

Quinn says the American Red Cross has opened two shelters in north central Illinois. One is in Oglesby and another in Roanoke.

Moderate Risk of Thunderstorms, Hail, Tornadoes Today

National Weather Service forecasters say a line of storms moving in out of the west this afternoon will bring a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes lasting into the evening.

Severe Weather Coming to Region

Severe weather is expected across the region over the next 48 hours.

The national weather service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch through 9:00pm for the WKMS listening area. A wind advisory will also be in effect beginning at 1:00am.

Forecasters expect a second line of storms to reach the area in late afternoon tomorrow. The storms should last late into the night. Forecasters say the conditions will be favorable for high winds, hail and tornadoes. Rainfall totals are expected to be 1 to 2 inches.

UPDATE: 3:48 p.m. National Weather Service Forecasters predict wind gusts up to and possibly exceeding 40 m-p-h in advance of a cold front that will bring severe thunderstorms to southeast Missouri, southern Illinois and the purchase region of western Kentucky. Forecasters say the storm system will impact our region between 4:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Paducah predicts severe storms for the early evening. McCracken County Emergency Management Meteorologist Beau Dodson says the storms are forming in front of a cold front that should start sweeping through the area soon.

The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for our area. NWS is reporting winds in excess of 60 mph and penny-sized hail.

Kentucky Utilities Sending Crews to Help with Isaac Damage

Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric have answered the call to help with restoration efforts following Hurricane Isaac. KU spokesman Cliff Feltham,

“What we have decided to do is send roughly two hundred of our…a combination of employees and our contractor crews south to be deployed wherever they are needed, and they left early this morning.”

Feltham says the crews will report to a staging area in either South Tennessee or North Mississippi, and will fan out from there. He believes their first assignment will be in the Baton Rouge area.
