Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon is encouraging residents to spend some time this holiday season helping curb hunger. Simon wants to highlight volunteering time, giving money or donating food to help children, seniors and families access nutritious food while the economy continues to recover.

Illinois' Governor Urges Food Bank Support

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn reminds state residents to support food banks during the holiday season and throughout the year. Quinn's office says there are eight food banks around the state and, according to Feeding Illinois, there are more than 1.9 million people in the state who don't have access to nutritious food. Quinn urges people to volunteer at food banks in their communities and donate to them.

Hopkins County Firefighter Opt Out Exemption

Elderly and Disabled Hopkins County residents can now opt out of firefighter dues permanently instead of notifying the county each year. Officials say anyone who is 65 or older or who has a disability exemption may choose to opt out indefinitely. The ordinance allows anyone in the county to refuse to pay yearly dues to their volunteer firefighter departments. However, should a fire break out, the property or homeowner would be responsible for the entire cost of the firefighters response. Residents have until June 1st to opt out.

Volunteers Needed to Clean Civil War Sites

Civil War locations throughout Kentucky and Tennessee are participating in the 16th annual Park Day activities this coming Saturday. The Civil War Trust sponsored event involves volunteers in clean up and site restoration. In our region, Kentucky’s Columbus-Belmont State Park and Tennessee’s Fort Donelson National Battlefield and National Cemetery will host volunteers. Starting times for each location will vary. We’ll have a link to a full list of sites at WKMS dot org.

Volunteer Group Discusses Obion County Animal Shelter

A group of Union City voluneers met with Tennessee animal rights activists this week to discuss the establishment of a new animal shelter to serve Obion County. The group, which currently has no formal name or officers, is working closely with Native Way Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on designs for a shelter in the Troy area. The current design is modeled after a Hopksinville, Kentucky shelter. Animal rights activist Josh Pool says the group will make a final decision on design and the cost of the project when the group meets again in March.
