Madisonville Library Board Faces Bidding Violation Allegations

Hopkins County Attorney Todd P'Pool said the Madisonville Public Library board didn't follow procedures when hiring contractors to renovate a library building, but board members acted in good faith.

Library Foundation members are criticizing the renovation and associated costs and using the violation to force the resignation of board member Bill Smith. State code outlines that a publicly funded entity must publicly solicit competitive bidding for projects with components that exceed $20,000. The library broad didn't solicit bids for the projects. P’Pool said the problems are technical in nature rather than criminal.

Madisonville May Re-Legalize Beekeeping

Beekeeping in Madisonville may no longer be illegal, thanks to a proposed city ordinance that passed its first reading Monday.

Councilman Mark Lee sponsored the ordinance and says bees are an important part of the local ecology and hopes, if passed, the ordinance would slowly reintroduce private operations in the city.

Baptist Health Madisonville’s president and CEO is retiring in July after 35 years in healthcare management. Berton Whitaker has been with the Madisonville healthcare system since 2006 and led the transition from Trover Health System to Baptist Health, the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Kentucky.
