It’s very likely many athletes in Kentucky high schools are not aware of a 1972 educational amendment which changed the face of athletics. A panel discussion in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Title Nine ruling was held yesterday at Midway College. The landmark legislation banned sex discrimination in schools for both academics and athletics. Kathy DeBoer, former UK Assistant Athletics Director participated in the program yesterday.

Governor's School for the Arts Cuts New Media Program

To help close a $50,000 budget gap created by state spending cuts, the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts is suspending its new media discipline. That area is comprised of film production, still photography, Claymation, and other digital arts.

MSU Upward Bound Program Gets 525K

The U. S. Department of Education has renewed funding for Murray State University’s Upward Bound Math and Science program with $525,000 in grants. Upward Bound strengthens students’ math and science skills and helps them pursue careers in those fields.

Executive Order Merges State's Two CTE Systems

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed an executive order Tuesday merging the state’s two high school career and technical education systems. Previously, the Kentucky Department for Workforce Investment operated 53 Area Technology Centers across the state, while 34 schools districts oversaw their own career and technical centers.

KY ACT Scores Improve, Still Below National Average

Kentucky's public high school seniors scored higher on the ACT college entrance exam than a year ago, but their overall performance remains below the national average. State education officials say the average composite ACT score rose to 19.5 for Kentucky's public high school class of 2012, up from 19.2 in 2011.

Kentucky has been the home of bass fishing for some time, and while the sport is a statewide obsession, not until this year has it been officially incorporated into the high school sports spectrum. Senate Bill Proposes "Alternative Diploma" for Special Needs Students

A bill creating an alternative diploma for special needs students is one vote away from becoming law.

Senate Bill 43 would apply different core standards to qualified students who would then earn the alternative diploma. Currently, special needs students in Kentucky receive only a certificate when they graduate.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Dennis Parrett, says he’s only trying to fix what he views as a problem.

KY House Votes to Raise High School Dropout Age

The Kentucky House has approved legislation that would raise the school dropout age to 18. House Bill 216 would require all school districts to have the dropout age at 18, unlike a bill that passed the Senate Feb. 8 which let local school boards decide the age. The bill's sponsor, Democrat Jeff Greer says allowing children to drop out of school when they're 16 or 17 is costly to them and the state. They earn less and are more likely to be on public assistance or be incarcerated for crimes.
