The Murray State Racers Men’s Basketball team opened their 2012 – 2013 season with an 87 - 74 win over the Freed-Hardeman Lions last night.

We kick off our WKMS Youth Radio Project with an interview by 9-year-old Murray Elementary School student Patrick Jones. He recently attended a basketball camp organized by Murray State Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Prohm. He scored a few minutes with Prohm to talk about the Racers’ upcoming season and the celebrated “ice cream shot.”

Louisiana State University says they've approached Murray State head coach Steve Prohm about filling their open coaching position. An LSU spokesperson tells WAFB in Baton Rouge they did meet with Prohm, but he is not a candidate for the coaching spot vacated by Trent Johnson. Johnson left LSU for the top spot at Texas Christian University earlier this week.

Murray State University men’s head basketball coach Steve Prohm is the first winner of CollegeInsider.com’s Joe B. Hall Award. The award is named for the former head coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, who led the team from 1972 until 1985. The award is presented to the top first year coach in Division I College Basketball. Prohm led the Racers to a 31 and 2 record, as well as the third round of the NCAA tournament in his first season.

Prohm with Racers Next Season: Agrees to New Contract

After what is arguably the most successful season in Racer Basketball history, Murray State University has renegotiated and extended the contract of head basketball coach Steve Prohm. The one-year extension means Prohm’s contract now runs through May 31, 2016.

Prohm and Canaan Coming Back to MSU

Both Murray State Head Basketball Coach Steve Prohm and point guard Isaiah Canaan say they’ll be back at MSU next season with the goal of taking the Racers to even greater heights after this season’s top 10 ranking and NCAA tournament berth. Prohm will likely be a top commodity in coaching searches this offseason after leading Murray State to a 31-2 record that included an NCAA tournament victory in his first season. For now, he says he wants to stay in Murray. Canaan says he’ll assess his future in the coming weeks after averaging a team-high 19 points per game.
