Paducah Renaissance Alliance Wants to Expand Board

The Paducah Renaissance Alliance wants to expand its advisory board from nine to 15 members. Executive Director Lisa Thompson and Chairperson Darlene Mazzone lobbied for the increase at the Paducah City Commission meeting Tuesday, saying the move would bring more diversity to the board. Commissioner Sandra Wilson agreed.

“The PRA board would have more people to give them ideas, more people to submit suggestions about what could be done, so I think it’s a great idea to expand it,” Wilson said.

Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham will swear-in Paducah's newly elected City Commissioners and Mayor Gayle Kaler this afternoon at city hall. This is Mayor Kaler's first term along with returning commissioners Richard Abraham, Carol Gualt and new commissioners Allan Rhodes, and Sandra Wilson. The ceremony starts at 5 pm with a commission meeting to follow at 6.

Columbia Theatre Restoration Progresses

The heads of two of the Paducah groups working together to restore and reopen the downtown Columbia Theatre as a multipurpose facility updated Mayor Bill Paxton and city commissioners last night on their progress. The Paducah Renaissance Alliance and Maiden Alley Cinema have combined efforts to revitalize the historic building. PRA Executive Director Lisa Thompson says they hope to turn it into a space for local events such as performances, music, dance recitals, film showings and more.

Paducah Pool, Historic Building Renovations Discussed

Paducah city commissioners introduced ordinances for two major renovation projects at their Tuesday night meeting. One continues the second phase of the Noble Park swimming pool renovation. It will include gutter and drain replacement, filtration, disinfection, pumping and other repairs. Bidding for the third phase starts in early 2013. The other authorizes the start of renovation on the Market House building and the River Discovery Center. Commissioner Gayle Kaler says she worked with the city manager and the city engineer-public works director for two years to get the buildings repaired.

Mercy Regional to Temporarily House Firefighters

Mercy Regional Emergency Medical Service will house displaced firefighters for the next month while Paducah’s Fire Station 3 undergoes renovations. Fire Chief Steve Kyle told the Paducah City Commission that Mercy Regional volunteered to house the firefighters and the fire truck to prevent an increased response time to the western side of the city.

Petition Against Tent City Brought to Paducah Commissioners

A group of Paducah citizens are telling city officials they don’t want a homeless resource center in their neighborhood. Resident Bob Kelley presented Mayor Bill Paxton and City Commissioners yesterday with more than 250 signatures on a petition asking for an ordinance banning homeless shelters in residential neighborhoods. Tent City Resource Center will open soon on Bridge Street near Kelley’s home.

Paducah City Commission Previews Health Insurance Plan

The Paducah City Commission heard a preview last night for the city’s health insurance plan for next year and approved an increase in premiums. Participants in the city’s health insurance plan can expect a rise of 5.3 percent on their premiums next year. The city’s allocation to employees is also going up 1.5 percent. The commissioners will vote Oct. 23 to hire Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield to provide stop loss insurance and administrative services for the health insurance plan.

Commission Adopts Hazard Mitigation Plan

Paducah City Commissioners adopted a new hazard mitigation plan Tuesday in order to receive funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Commissioners and Mayor Pro Tem Gayle Kaler approved a municipal order for parts of the Purchase Region Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan applying to McCracken County. Jurisdictions covered by the plan must adopt it in order to receive FEMA funding. The plan identifies potential hazards for our region such as tornados, severe thunderstorms, flooding and winter weather.

Paducah City Commission Passes Olivet Church Road Widening

The McCracken County Fiscal Court and Paducah’s City Commission met jointly Tuesday to discuss land transactions as well as improvements to Olivet Church Road. The Court and Commission held an executive session to talk about the sale or acquisition of certain real estate. In open session, they passed a joint resolution to widen Olivet Church and improve its curbs and gutters. City Commissioner Gayle Kaler said the project would increase access to one of the city’s major hubs.
