The Yeiser Art Center in Paducah shows its 20th Annual Teen Spirit Exhibition through February 15. Students from area public high schools, Christian schools and home schools entered a massive array of art for judging by Paul Aho who visits Sounds Good via a telephone interview with Kate Lochte.

The Yeiser Art Center has been promoting art and artists to the Paducah community for more than half a century. The center features local and international exhibits of all kinds of visual art. It also operates the only officially designated Kentucky Crafted gift shop in far western Kentucky. Joining Angela Hatton to talk about how the Yeiser is working to keep the visual arts thriving is Executive Director Josh White.

The Yeiser Art Center gallery has been a visual arts gallery staple in Paducah since the 1950's. YAC has made a name for itself by offering donation-based admission, and with popular annual exhibits like Paducah Photo, Fantastic Fibers, Teen Spirit, and the Yeiser Members Show. The YAC’s goal is to provide access to professional and amateur visual art, and art education programs for people of all ages. With the addition of a new executive director, YAC is renewing its focus on reaching the community.

Paducah’s Yeiser Art Center opens a solo exhibition of Southern Indiana artist Rob Millard-Mendez later this month. Much of the sculpture in the show harkens back to his youth onboard his father’s fishing boat in Massachusetts. Millard-Mendez blends a wry sense of humor with an unusual amount of depth in his work. Doodling becomes a Yeiser attraction

When a business meeting gets particularly boring, your pen starts to wander. Curlicues, horses and airplanes appear, scrawled along the margins of your notes, but as you doodle, are you really creating art? According to the Yeiser Art Center, you are. Once a month this year, local interior designer Bill Ford has held doodling workshops for children in the center, and he recently held his first class for adults. Casey Northcutt has more on an art form spawned from boredom.

Fantastic Fibers Exhibits Non-Traditional Mediums

Recently the Yeiser Art Center opened a competitive exhibition featuring not a drop of paint. The artists’ works deal in the tactile, pliable and stitchable. Fantastic Fibers welcomes the work of non-traditional artists from around the globe. In preparation for the exhibition, WKMS' Drew Adams spoke to Lora Rocke, a former winner of Fantastic Fibers and a contributing artist this year. When Lora isn’t in her Nebraska studio, she spends her time creating quilts, teaching workshops and lecturing across the country.
