Youth Report: Not So Fast, All About LBL's Turtle Derby

Earlier this month, over 16 million viewers tuned in to watch the 139th annual Kentucky Derby. To celebrate the event, the Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes held their own, much slower race: the Kentucky Turtle Derby. WKMS Youth Reporter Aaron Sikkel covered the event and sat down with Naturalist Aviva Yasgur to learn about how turtles contribute to the region's ecosystem. Temporary Closures at LBL Including Turkey Bay OHV Area

From Press Release: Land Between The Lakes (LBL) received excessive rainfall throughout the day Saturday leading to extremely saturated soil conditions that caused the temporary closure of Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area, as of April 29th, until further notice. Turkey Bay management will re-evaluate trail conditions as the weather improves.

The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will have to cut a million dollars from its annual operating budget following across-the-board budget reductions for all national parks. LBL Area Supervisor Bill Lisowsky says this means some smaller roads along with Jones Creek and Rushing Creek campgrounds will be closed.

Extra Water Keeps LBL Animals Cool

Land Between the Lakes wildlife management workers say extra water is keeping their captive animals cool. LBL manages over 100 bison and around 35 elk, as well as numerous species at its Nature Station. Wildlife technician Curtis Fowler said so far the bison and elk are doing well in the heat
