Puppies Sound Good: Meet Bella

Today we met Bella, a Beagle, Westie, and Pekingese mix. She was born on January 13th, 2013 with three siblings and is available for adoption from The Humane Society of Calloway County. She was very sweet to everyone at WKMS; loved to be held and played with. She got lots of treats because she did such a good job making her radio debut.

All Animals Safe After Christian County Shelter Fire Extinguished

A fire damaged the Christian County Animal Shelter Monday morning. The county’s Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says all of the animals survived the fire. He also says there is some structural damage to one wing and the offices in the building.

Puppies Sound Good second Wednesdays monthly on WKMS. Kathy Hodge from the Humane Society of Calloway County brought in two very sweet and cuddly dogs today. Lady is a Pekingese Mix, and a recent mother. Her puppies turn 8 weeks old today! She was curious about the radio station, adventurous but calm and happily greeted everyone she met. Kenai is a baby Dachshund/Beagle Mix who was a little nervous when he first came up, but it was his first adventure. He loved being cuddled and fell asleep in Todd's arms during the conversation. A new man-made cave near Clarksville is being built to give thousands of bats a safe haven from a devastating infection called white-nose syndrome; the experimental project may house bats’ best hope against the disease.

Animals Rescued from Cape Girardeau Home

Officials in Cape Girardeau County removed approximately 25 animals from a residence near Millersville, Missouri. The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Department searched the home of Paulette Tidwell after receiving a tip about unlicensed commercial breeding and substandard conditions; as well as a large sale of animals that happened last Saturday. The dogs, cats, equines, and birds were rescued and transported to St. Louis for placement in licensed Missouri shelters.

McCracken County Fiscal Court Meeting 4/9

The McCracken County Fiscal Court decided last night to schedule a workshop to discuss an advisory board for the county’s animal shelter. Judge-Executive Van Newberry says the current proposal outlines a governing body of five members. The Court will hold the workshop within the next few weeks. The court also voted to allocate $12,000 toward transportation for non-public school children in the St. John’s area. Newberry says for years, the state has given money to the Court for this purpose, and it has mainly helped transport children to the St. Mary’s School System.

Abandoned Animals Problem for Public Lands

A 10-foot albino python discovered in Land Between the Lakes Wednesday is the latest in the growing problem abandoned pets pose to public parks. LBL's Denise Scmittou says abandoned animals are a burden to LBL staff who must capture the animals and find a suitable shelter. Abandonment is also hard on the animals, who often lack the skills to survive in the wild. She says people unable to take care of their animals have plenty of options other than abandonment.

National Group Calls for Strict Punishment in Animal Abuse Case

A national animal rescue group wants strong punitive charges against a woman accused of animal abuse in Graves County. The Animal Rescue Corps sent a letter to Graves County Attorney, John Cunningham calling for heavy punishment of Shannon Lacewell. She stands accused of housing nearly 100 dogs in unsanitary conditions at her Wingo home. The ARC is requesting Lacewell be charged with a 2^nd degree misdemeanor for each of the dogs found on the property in addition to a felony animal abuse charge.

Volunteer Group Discusses Obion County Animal Shelter

A group of Union City voluneers met with Tennessee animal rights activists this week to discuss the establishment of a new animal shelter to serve Obion County. The group, which currently has no formal name or officers, is working closely with Native Way Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on designs for a shelter in the Troy area. The current design is modeled after a Hopksinville, Kentucky shelter. Animal rights activist Josh Pool says the group will make a final decision on design and the cost of the project when the group meets again in March.
