Alcohol and Cigarette Taxes

Frankfort, KY – The House has approved a proposal that would raise cigarette and alcohol taxes. It would increase the tax on cigarettes from 30 cents to 60 cents a pack and would impose a 6 percent retail sales tax on all alcohol products, generating an additional 179-million-dollars a year in total. The plan also would transfer 219-million-dollars from the state's rainy day fund to the general fund. The measure now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Early Graduation Bill

Frankfort, KY – The Kentucky State Senate has approved an early graduation bill. The measure allows high school freshman to take a number of rigorous courses in order to graduate in three years. Participants would have to maintain a minimum three-oh grade point average and successful students would then earn a certificate valued at about 28-hundred dollars to use at a Kentucky college or university. Bill sponsor First District Senator Ken Winters says there's no way to know how many students might choose the option.

High Winds Continue Today

Paducah, KY – High winds are expected to continue in much of the region today. National Weather Service officials are most concerned that the high winds combined with saturated grounds could uproot or displace trees and power poles weakened from January's ice storm. Science and Operations officer Pat Spodin says residents can expect strong winds between 20 and 40 miles per hour this afternoon, with gusts likely over 50 miles per hour.

Murray Car Jacking Attempt

Murray, KY – Murray police officers are still investigating a possible car jacking that occurred Monday night. Murray resident Alisa Camp told investigators she left her vehicle in the parking lot of a local business. After Camp returned to the vehicle an unknown male assailant grabbed her from behind and told her to drive north on Highway 641. Camp was able to stop her vehicle and call for help. Camp received minor injuries from the incident. Officers later recovered the vehicle on Squire Holland Road. The investigation is ongoing.
